Statkraft and Skagerak Energi Awarded 14MNOK in Support to Develop the Green Hydrogen Bunkering Solution for the World’s First Zero-Emission Bulk Carrier
Zero-Emission Bulk Carrier
HeidelbergCement and the Norwegian agricultural cooperative Felleskjøpet AGRI, together with shipping company Egil Ulvan Rederi, have received 100 MNOK in support from Norwegian government enterprise Enova to build the world’s first zero-emission bulk carrier.
HeidelbergCement is a German multinational building materials company headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany. It is a DAX corporation and is one of the largest building materials companies in the world. On 1 July 2016, HeidelbergCement AG completed the acquisition of a 45% shareholding in Italcementi. Bunkering Solution
The bunkering solution from Statkraft and Skagerak Energi was awarded 14 MNOK in support. The vessel is scheduled for completion and commissioning in 2024.
Transport Aggregates Products
The plan is to transport aggregates products for HeidelbergCement and grain for partner Felleskjøpet from West Norway to East Norway, and vice versa, using emission-free transport.
Tender Competition
In 2021, a tender competition was conducted where Egil Ulvan Rederi in Norway was selected as the operator that will build the vessel.
Energy Consumption
The ship is highly energy efficient, using rotor sails and has a streamlined design to reduce energy consumption. At the same time Statkraft and Skagerak Enerenrgi was appointed to be the supplier of green hydrogen to the ship.
Support also Given to the Bunkering Solution for Green Hydrogen
Enova will support Statkraft and Skagerak Energi with 14 million MNOK, to develop the bunkering solution for Egil Ulvan’s hydrogen-driven bulk carrier.
Statkraft and Skagerak Energi
Statkraft and Skagerak Energi are working with container-swapping as a primary bunkering solution for bulk and container ships. Compressed green hydrogen will be stored in exchangeable containers.
This solution is relevant for both shipping and other transport purposes.
Birgitte R. Vartdal
“For Statkraft, this is an important milestone in establishing ourselves as a leading hydrogen producer in line with our strategy. It fits well with other initiatives we have on hydrogen to transport purposes in both Norway and Sweden,” says Birgitte R. Vartdal, Executive Vice President for Wind and Solar Power at Statkraft.
