ACCIONA Named World Leader in Sustainability
ACCIONA ended 2019 as the world’s most sustainable utility according to the Sustainability Yearbook 2020 published by S&P Global and RobecoSAM. With 90 points out of 100, the company has taken the top spot among the index’s electricity category.
To produce this annual guide, S&P Global and RobecoSAM analyzed more than 4,700 top-flight companies in 61 different industries worldwide. The methodology involved a broad assessment of sustainability, including economic and environmental performance and social and human resources variables.
ACCIONA obtained the highest score for its environmental performance, mainly due to improvements in “operational eco-efficiency” (reduction in pollutant emissions, efficiency in energy and water use, waste management, etc.). As a distinctive feature with respect to other utilities, the report highlighted that ACCIONA has been carbon-neutral since 2016.
The company also obtained the highest score in its industry in the “environmental reporting” category, which includes environmental policy, management systems, power generation and water-related risks.
The Sustainability Yearbook 2020 also rated ACCIONA for its economic and governance performance. In this area, the report highlights the strategic definition of ACCIONA’s goals, its progress in corporate governance, and its initiatives related to better detecting business opportunities.
In the social dimension, ACCIONA gained 13 points with respect to the previous year due to the company’s recent efforts to attract and retain talent, develop human capital and engage with stakeholders. The company also obtained the highest score in its industry for “social reporting”.
As a result, S&P Global and RobecoSAM granted ACCIONA the Gold Sustainability Yearbook Award 2020, ranking it among the world’s top utilities in terms of sustainability. It also defined the company as an “industry mover”.
ACCIONA is among the 2020 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations and is also ranked in the CDP Climate Change A List.
