TNB Installs First Floating Solar Farm At Majung Power Plant

Tenaga Nasional Berhad through its wholly-owned subsidiary TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) has made use of the ash pool at its Manjung power plant into a floating solar power space.

The project although small but significant in terms of messaging as the company’s commitment toward transitioning to greener energy becomes more evident. For the project, TNB installed floating photovoltaic (PV) solar panels at the Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station in Manjung Perak as this will be a pilot for future floating solar farms. The 175 -hectare pond which is a dumping ground for ash from the power plant, can now be potentially used as a floating solar farm to generate energy of at least 100MW.

There are currently, a total of 288 PV solar panels installed in the pool with an installed capacity 105.12kWp which is equivalent to a reduction of 7.9 tonnes of carbon emissions per month or carbon dioxide absorption of 409 trees. The electricity generated through this system can meet the needs of 30 houses.

TNB is in a race to meet its carbon zero goal by 2050 and has been embarking on projects towards this end, other notable involvement includes large -scale solar farms (LSS) and rooftop solar panels, adoption of hydro-powered energy, and reduced dependency on coal.
