PGNiG to Improve Energy Efficiency at its Dębno Production Facility
Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) is set to reduce the amount of electricity and natural gas used by the Dębno Oil and Gas Production Plant in its processes by approximately 7000 MWh annually, which may deliver up to PLN 0.5m in cost savings every year. The Energy Efficiency Improvement Programme is being implemented across the PGNiG Group.
A system for managing energy use in the Dębno production facility’s processes is to be put in place by the end of 2021. Prior to the system implementation phase, precise metering equipment will be deployed, and a system for monitoring and managing energy use at the facility will be prepared. PGNiG has already selected a contractor to perform these works.
‘Without knowing a facility’s actual electricity and gas consumption parameters, it is virtually impossible to take steps aimed at reducing the facility’s energy consumption and improving its energy efficiency,’ noted Arkadiusz Sekściński, Vice President of the PGNiG Management Board, Development. ‘The energy consumption reviews conducted as part of the energy management system in place at PGNiG have shown the need to manage utilities consumption in process facilities on an ongoing basis, which can be done only by providing additional metering equipment and enabling automated data analysis. The Dębno 4.0 project, as we call it, is in line with trends and meets the requirements of today’s green economy, which is entering the fourth industrial revolution,’ Mr Sekściński added.
The project seeks to achieve an annual reduction in energy (electricity and natural gas) used by the facility’s processes of 2% from 2022 onwards, representing average final energy savings of approximately 603 toe (tonnes of oil equivalent), about 7000 MWh, per year. According to electricity and natural gas price projections, the project will generate approximately PLN 0.5m in average annual cost savings.
‘With the metering equipment and energy consumption monitoring and management system in place, we will be able to check energy consumption levels in real time and, using historical meter readings, adjust processes by optimally predicting future conditions,’ added Krzysztof Krupiński, Head of the PGNiG Zielona Góra Branch, where the Dębno Oil and Gas Production Plant is located.
The consistent energy efficiency improvements to be achieved by PGNiG SA in 2020–2026 under the Energy Efficiency Improvement Programme are expected to deliver an average annual reduction in energy consumed by gas extraction and storage facilities and nitrogen rejection units of 1.5%, representing energy savings of approximately 46,000 toe, which may generate total cost savings of approximately PLN 50m over six years.
